Oprah Winfrey has been happily in love with partner Stedman Graham since 1986 and given she’s basically the source of wisdom for all things, our ears perked up when we heard her talking about finding “the one.”
In honor of National Singles Day earlier this week, Winfrey told E! News that despite feeling lonely and at times getting frustrated dating, being single is actually really important.
"It's the best time where you get to make yourself the lover, the friend, the companion, the nurturer, the supporter that you would want,” she shared. “It's the best time … you need to go through that ‘Oh, oh, oh, I'm dating him, I'm dating him … oh that's good … drop it like it's hot,’ all that. And then you need a period where you just come down to yourself: That's what you need. And then, when you are ready, he will show up."
Winfrey has been famously unmarried to Stedman for decades now. The former talk show host and Stedman got engaged in 1992, but they never formally married.
"Nobody believes it, but it’s true. The only time I brought it up was when I said to Stedman, ‘What would have happened if we had actually gotten married?’" she previously told Vogue. "And the answer is: 'We wouldn’t be together.'"
Oprah explained that, in her opinion, they wouldn’t have stayed together had they tied the knot because “marriage requires a different way of being in this world.”
"His interpretation of what it means to be a husband and what it would mean for me to be a wife would have been pretty traditional,” she added. “And I would not have been able to fit into that."
