Selena Gomez's new album with her fiancé Benny Blanco was a "leap of faith" despite their strong relationship.
In a new interview with iHeartRadio's Z100 in New York, the Rare Beauty founder explained the trust that went into creating I Said I Love You First with Blanco, their first joint album that dropped earlier this month.
"They always say, 'Don't work with your partner 'cause it could get crazy,' but he's just so wonderful at communicating — and of course very talented that it's unbelievable — so when he came to me with the idea of making an album, I said, well yeah let's try it out," she said, and it went better than she expected. "We got along really well. He understood the music and understood what I felt, and it kind of just happened naturally. I got very lucky, I feel like we did a good job."
Gomez did note that the album making process wasn't totally seamless.
"There's only a few times where I was like, 'Okay can you leave the room so I can work,'" she said, laughing. She said her fiancé would originally give her a note on the music but that he would then snowball into discussions like what he wanted to make for dinner.
Gomez and Blanco got engaged in December 2024 after more than a year of dating, with the Only Murders in the Building star sharing her excitement about their "forever" while showing off her stunning diamond ring. However, the proposal nearly didn't happen as Gomez almost didn't show up to the romantic surprise because she was "grumpy."
