Backstreet Boys Tease Super Bowl Spot, Explain Meaning Behind “DNA” Album

Backstreet’s back, alright! The Backstreet Boys stopped by the studio on Friday, January 25, and dished on their tenth studio album DNA, forthcoming Super Bowl spot with Chance the Rapper and more. The fivesome — AJ McLean, Howie Dorough, Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson, and Brian Littrell — have made a comeback this year, even earning themselves a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.”

“I think all five of us would give you the same answer,” Brian said of their success. “It comes down to the music.”

Their recently released 12-track 10th studio album DNA features tracks written by Lauv, Andy Grammer, Shawn Mendes, Stuart Crichton and more and ties together their years of musical experience and growth.

“When we were putting the record together, we sometimes like to have little themes,” the BSB explained. “We will record a song and that will kind of lead the way as far of the theme of the album goes, but a lot of the stuff we’d been recording since we collaborated with Florida Georgia Line, we had some stuff that leaned more Nashville, acoustic, country-vibe and then we also had some stuff that had an EDM vibe to it and then when we recorded ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’ … that had a dance, contemporary-feel to it so half the album felt acoustic and half the album was feeling electronic so I was like ‘What if we did one album digital, the other wold be analog?’” BSB continued. “… And AJ was like, ‘What if we call the album DNA?’ … So there’s a little bit of flavor of everything which makes up the DNA of all of our influences and our sound.”

The fivesome will also be appearing on your TV amid the Super Bowl on February 2, teaming up with Chance the Rapper for an LOL Doritos ad.

“[The concept] we can’t say,” they teased. “… It’s fun, it’s a mashup, … it’s adding some spice to a classic.”
