Sam Smith Admits They Idolized Demi Lovato, ‘Camp Rock’ And It’s Everything

Sam Smith and Demi Lovato have teamed up for new gender-redefining track “I’m Ready” and it’s the perfect pair. And Sam, who identifies as nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns, has always wanted to work with the songstress. Sam Zoomed into On Air With Ryan Seacrest on Friday, April 17, and shared how they came together and why they thinks it’s important to remember COVID-19 quarantine isn’t a “productivity contest.”

“I’m just trying to stay positive for everyone working out there,” Sam shared with Seacrest, sharing they’ve been quarantined for 5 weeks now with their sister in London.

“I’m being super, super easy on myself,” he added while talking about working on new music and their forthcoming third studio album during isolation. “Because I think this isn’t a productivity contest, you know? This is a tough time and if you come out of it and all you’ve done is get through it, that’s completely OK.”

The Grammy winner shared they’ll also be renaming their To Die For album amid the current pandemic.

“The album title has the word ‘die’ in it and it’s just not sensitive to what’s happening right now,” Sam explained. “It’s important for me to do right by [my fans] and I felt like it was wrong. I’m changing the album a little bit but I’m all good. I’m all good,” they added. “Everything is all set to come out when it's ready. I just don’t know when its going to come out.”

“I’m Ready” will be featured on the forthcoming album and was a dream come true for Sam, who admitted to Seacrest they’ve always been a huge Lovatic.

“I was in this amazing space a few months ago where I just felt there were no rules … [and] I love Demi Lovato,” Sam reflected. “We’re the same age so whenever she was in Camp Rock I was a fat teenager outside of London you know wishing one day I could sing and watching her life and watching the way she’s got herself though pop culture for me is something that’s really amazing. Her honesty and authenticity from the beginning has always been so incredible. … To write with her and sing with her was a dream come true.”
