Payless Opens Fake Luxury Store, Gets Influencers To Pay $600 For $20 Shoes

Sometimes the price of shoes is just absurd, but there are people out there who have no problem dropping hundreds of dollars on a pair that they fall in love with. But how much do they really know about the shoes? Payless did a little experiment where they opened up a pretend luxury shoe store in LA and invited fashionistas and influencers to it. They called their shop "Palessi," after a fake high-end designer. They then filled it with shoes anyone can buy at Payless for up to $40 and filmed what happened next.

One influencer said on camera about a pair she loved, "I would pay $400, $500. People will be like, 'Where did you get those!?'" Others shelled out hundreds of dollars for shoes they could've gotten for less than a tenth of what they paid, citing the design of the shoes and the quality of the material as justification for the high price.

The team behind the videos told Adweek, "We wanted to push the social experiment genre to new extremes, while simultaneously using it to make a cultural statement."

As for the influencers, even though all their purchases were real, they got their money back and even got to keep the shoes.
