Lawmakers in California are considering a bill that would allow cities to establish zones where bars and restaurants can serve alcohol until 4 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and satte holidays…in an effort to revitalize nightlife in the state.
Assembly member Matt Haney says that Downtown area in California are struggling to return to pre-pandemic levels almost half a decade later. And with major events coming to the state, like the next two Super Bowls, the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics…he wants vibrant nighttime economies.
Currently, last call is at 2 a.m. across California. The only exemption is Intuit Dome, home of the Clippers which is allowed to have a 4 a.m. last call.
Under this bill, cities would have full control over who would be granted extended closing times…and he says “World class cities need world class nightlife.
Side note- New York allows businesses to serve alcohol into 4am
Chicago, allows businesses to apply for a 5am last call.
Nevada and Louisiana have no last calls. You can go 24 hours.
