Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a new law that bans plastic bags from being provided at grocery store checkouts.
I’m sure you’re thinking… hasn’t this happened already?
Yes, kinda…
California was the first in the country to pass a law banning plastic grocery bags 10 years ago.
But as we all know…grocery stores were still allowed to provide plastic bags (for a ten cents) as long as they were reusable or recyclable.
So nothing really changed expect we got thicker plastic bags in stores that plastic companies argue are reusable and recyclable.
It turns out…the bags are nearly impossible to recycle. Not a single recycling facility in California accepts them and as a result, plastic bag waste has climbed to an all-time high. So that backfired…
So, now it’s legit happening…NO MORE plastic bags beginning Jan. 1, 2026. Not for a dime…not if you forget to bring a reusable…not if you ask “pretty please”. None.
