One of the best things about living in Los Angeles is that there is constantly events going on... yes, even on a Tuesday night.
Last night was the premiere of West Side Story at El Capitan Theater in Hollywood. I was invited to go (and brought my husband Michael along for a little date night!) and not only was director Steven Spielberg there, but the ENTIRE cast, too!
I was actually sitting 2 rows in front of Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler!
And if you have never heard Rachel Zegler's story... it's a MUST. This film is her debut screen performance (uhm, no big deal or anything) and she was selected by Steven Spielberg from a pool of 30,000 applicants while she was still 17 years old. After filming this movie and waiting for it to come out - she has also signed on to play Snow White in a new live-action remake. So if you aren't paying attention to her yet, now is the time!
Before the movie started Steven Spielberg walked out onto the stage, and talked about the making of the film. He mentioned how this movie took a long time to make and one reason for that was actually that he was scared to make it because he had never done a musical!
But it was his wife Kate who encouraged him to do it - she basically told him to get over it and to lead with love! Ahhhh... the power of a spouse! It made it even more special that my husband was there with me when he told that story.
This film was soooo powerful... and I don’t know if it was because this was the first movie I’ve seen in theaters in over 2 years, or if it’s because Steven Spielberg directing it or what. But I cannot recommend more to go see this movie.
It both blows my mind, and makes me a little bit sad how a movie that was made in1961 is still relevant in 2021. But the art is just so beautiful.
It’s a must see and it’s in theaters this Friday!
