One Woman Gave Birth While Taking The Bar Exam, No Big Deal

Picture this: you're in the middle of the biggest test of your professional life... and you realize that your water has broken.

Would you stop the test in the moment and get to the hospital? Or would you weigh your options and finish the test, then go on to deliver your baby? Well, you guessed it: this really happened to one woman while taking the bar exam to become a lawyer. And yep, she totally delivered the baby AND managed to finish her test.

Here's how it happened:

Brianna Hill, who recently graduated from Loyola University School of Law in Chicago, was originally supposed to take the exam when she was 28 weeks pregnant. However, as with everything in 2020, those plans changed due to the pandemic and she instead had to take the test when she was a bit further along in her pregnancy, 38 weeks to be exact.

When taking the remote version of the exam, participants have to complete four 90 minute sections over a two day period. They also must stay in front of their computer's camera for the entire 90 minutes to ensure they are not cheating on the test... but about 30 minutes into one of Brianna's sections, she stood up and realized her water had broken. But she couldn't get up and go check, so she finished that section and THEN checked and sure enough, her water was definitely broken.

Instead of throwing in the towel and explaining to the proctor for the test that she needed to go have a baby, Brianna decided to KEEP GOING!

“I took my break, got myself cleaned up, called my husband, midwife, and mom, cried because I was a little panicked, then sat down to take the second part because my midwife told me I had time before I needed to go to the hospital."

Brianna then went on to finish the second section of the day, then go to the hospital to have her baby (a boy!) a few hours later.

EVEN CRAZIER? The next day she took the final two sections of the exam from her hospital bed. The hospital staff put a "Do Not Disturb" sign on her door to allow her privacy, and she fed her baby boy during her breaks. I mean COME ON. Superwoman!

I am so impressed with women giving birth and having babies in general... why not add a maaaajor career-defining exam into the mix!

Congratulations, Brianna!! Wishing you the best in your life as a lawyer AND new mom!
