Demi Lovato joined Ryan Seacrest on-air on Monday, April 5, and opened up about everything from her special friendship with Ariana Grande to her vulnerable and honest new album Dancing with the Devil … The Art of Starting Over and much more.
Dancing with the Devil ... The Art of Starting Over is Demi’s 7th studio album. The 19-track album delves into her personal struggles with addiction, relapsing and her relationships.
On the album, Demi teamed up with pal Ariana Grande for hit track “Met Him Last Night.” The duo, Demi shared, have a special bond and reconnected when Lovato consulted Ari about teaming up with manager Scooter Braun.
“We hadn’t seen each other in a minute and it was good to catch up with her, but I also wanted to connect with her because I was looking for new management and there’s a certain energy that some women have in the industry, like, they’ll be your friends, but they want let you use their glam team or whatever,” Demi explained. “It’s a little competition. … So, I wanted to make sure — I knew that I wanted Scooter to be my manager; I knew I wanted to take a meeting with him, … but I also didn’t know how to approach that with Ariana,” Demi added. “… We’re not super similar, but we’re both females in the pop industry around the same age and so I thought it was important we have a conversation about it and she’s just the most supportive. She’s the type of person that will give you her glam squad and then some and then her manager.”
Demi added that Ariana is a true gem.
“Like, she’s a rare breed,” Demi continued of the Grammy winner. “And I don’t know if it’s because she’s so f--king talented she doesn’t have to be insecure about s--t, but I think that's just her heart and she’s also like really, really smart.”
Demi added that Ariana “was so supportive that not only did she give me the blessing to work with Scooter,” but she also penned a track for Demi’s album.
“When she started writing this new song called ‘Met Him Last Night’ she had me in mind and she was like ‘I need to write this for Demi’ so she ended up sending it to me and I loved it and I was like, ‘Can you stay on it? You sound so dope.’ And she was like, ‘No, no I’ll be like mystery harmony lady.’ And I was like, ‘No, the world wants to hear you too. Like, let’s go!’” … I’m so thankful to have a friendship like her’s because she’s awesome.”
