Dr. Sanjay Gupta Sheds Light on Kids Returning to School Amid Pandemic

Are your kids gearing up to return to school amid the global Coronavirus pandemic? Are you a teacher having to help create the new normal with distanced learning? Dr. Sanjay Gupta joined Ryan Seacrest via Zoom on-air on Tuesday, August 18, and shed light on some of the nation’s most asked questions and concerns amid the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

“There are some things are are impossible to prepare for and so you just have to let yourself absorb things,” the neurosurgeon and medical reporter shared. “This has been a wholly unique experience.”

And with the new socially-distanced normal, Dr. Sanjay Gupta admitted his current focus is on kids returning to school.

“Frankly, it’s all about kids,” he shared of what he’s discussing on his podcast, Coronavirus: Fact vs Fiction. “We’re starting to go back to school here … I think about that a lot. I spent a lot of time talking to the education minister for Denmark yesterday. … Denmark is held up as a country that’s done it right. Kids are going back to school. Numbers have stayed low. How’d they do it? I think that’s one of the biggest topics. … But, nobody has ever gone through something like this before.”

While Dr. Sanjay Gupta says we do deserve some “credit” for making lifestyle changes rather quickly, it’s without a doubt effecting children.

“What does that do to our kids? Their lives have been interrupted. Parts of their lives have been canceled,” Dr. Sanjay Gupta reflected. “…I remember talking to my grandparents when I was a kid and they’d gone through the 1918 flu and their lives got back to normal, but how long did it take? How were they changed? So those are some of the big questions I have.”

As for distanced learning, Dr. Sanjay Gupta says it’s also the younger ones who will likely suffer most.

“As far as the quality of learning, I think virtual online learning at the college level is a pretty reasonable thing. … It’s the young kids I worry about,” he added. “… I think virtual learning is just going to be really hard for them. … I don’t think it can be at the same level of learning they would have otherwise had.”
