Kelly Rowland admitted during a candid conversation with a contestant on The Voice Australia, where she’s a coach, that she struggled sharing the spotlight with Beyoncé during their time in Destiny’s Child together -- and even afterward.
The honest confession came after a contestant admitted he was suppressed by fears of being overshadowed by his talented older brother.
“I know this feeling," Kelly said. "Can you imagine what it’s like being in a group with Beyoncé? I would just torture myself in my head thinking, ‘I can’t wear this dress' or 'I can’t have a song like that because it’s too much like B,’" she admitted. "You need to realize they’re gonna compare you regardless. Do your thing."
“There was a whole decade, if I am being completely honest, where it was like the elephant in the room," she added. "It was the thing that would constantly be on my shoulder.”
Kelly, who remains close with Beyoncé, concluded she learned to embrace their similarities and differences and for all to shine on their own.
