People Have Pledged Over $300K for This NASA-Developed Perfume: Listen

People have pledged more than $300,000 to bring a NASA-developed fragrance that smells like outer space to to curious fans dubbed “Eau de Space.”

The scent was developed by a chemist who was initially contracted by NASA in 2008 to recreate the smell of space for use during astronaut training. Now, according to the product's Kickstarter page, "through sheer determination, grit, a lot of luck and a couple of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, we got it out.”

So, what does space smell like?

Some astronauts have described it as smelling like “seared steak," “burnt cookies” or “gun powder.” Then there’s the opposite side of the spectrum who say it smells like “rum and raspberries."

The Eau de Space Kickstarter had an initial goal of $1,969, a homage to the year humans first landed on the moon, and have since achieved over $300,000.

The team responsible for the project consists of professionals in the fashion, tech, design and logistics fields and the purpose is to inspire students to pursue careers in science, technology, education and mathematics. The perfume can be ordered in bulk for learning institutions or it can be ordered in individual 4-ounce bottles if the team reaches its goal by August 17.
