Oops! Issa Rae was caught checking her phone during Betty White’s Emmys speech during the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday, September 17, and Twitter naturally had mixed reactions.
White, 96, took the stage after being introduced by Alec Baldwin and Kate McKinnon, who relived Emmy history, sharing the first show started in 1949.
“Thank you. I'm just going to quit while I'm ahead!” White joked after McKinnon gushed over the icon, who has eight Emmys to her name.
White continued by telling a story about someone referring to her as the “first lady of television,” joking about her age. "It's incredible that I'm still in this business and you are still putting up with me," she concluded.
The camera then cut to the audience, who gave White a standing ovation and also caught Issa Rae checking her phone.
“.@IssaRae is probably on her phone telling her homegirls to get the bottles ready because it’s been a LONG night. A mood #EMMYs,” The Root tweeted, while another Twitter user added: “What does @IssaRae have against sweet lil Betty White?! #Emmys”
The Insecure actress was up for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series but lost the award to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Rachel Brosnahan.
