OMG we are hungry just thinking about this: Shailene Woodley was on a strict — and we mean strict — diet to prepare for her role in Adrift. In an interview with The Times, Woodley shared that she ate only 350 calories a day for the last two weeks while portraying real-life yachtswoman Tami Oldham Ashcraft in the film.
“I had a can of salmon, some steamed broccoli and two egg yolks every day — 350 calories. It was f--king miserable,” she told The Times, revealing she had to undergo the physical transformation to look as though she had starved as Ashcraft did.
“I can’t sleep when I’m hungry,” she added. “So I would have a glass of wine to basically pass the f--k out.”
In the film, which is based off true story and a book by the same title, Woodley’s character and her fiancé, Robert (played by Sam Claflin), take off to sail from Tahiti to San Diego before encountering one of the worst hurricanes ever recorded, Hurricane Raymond.
On top of starving for some of the production, Woodley and Claiflin also got seasick from time to time.
“We were holding each other’s hair back,” Claflin revealed to People magazine. “It was the best way to kind of get to know someone. When you see someone with sick around their mouth, it’s bizarrely a great opportunity to break the ice.”
Adrift is in theaters now.
