The New York Times has named Netflix’s One Day at a Time one of the best shows of 2017 and after watching just one episode over the weekend, On Air With Ryan Seacrest producer and on-air personality Patty Rodriguez ended up watching both seasons from beginning to end and was obsessed. Patty connected with Justina Machado during a phoner on-air on Friday, February 23, and bonded over the show.
The show, inspired by Norman Lear's 1975 series of the same name, follows the life of Penelope (played by Justina), a newly single Army veteran, and her Cuban-American family as they navigate the ups and downs of life.
The show, as Patty explained on-air, had her laughing out loud and also sobbing.
Penelope’s character and her family reminded her so much of her own family. Her son Alexander was in the room playing while she was watching and she did not think he was paying attention, until he said out of nowhere, "Momma his name is Alex and he looks like me!," referring to Penelope’s son younger child Alex on the show.
When he said this, Patty knew we had to have Justina Machado on the show to talk about why One Day at a Time is loved by many and why representation matters.
