Oscar Nom Mary J. Blige’s Epic Night Out Was Thanks to Diddy

Mary J. Blige is on fire. The Grammy winning songstress and actress phoned into On Air With Ryan Seacrest on Tuesday, February 13, and shared that timing is everything when it comes to her two Oscar nominations for Netflix film Mudbound

Mary J. is up for both Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song for the film, which is based off a novel of the same name by Hillary Jordan. She plays Florence Jackson, the matriarch of a poor sharecropping family whose son Ronsel (played by Jason Mitchell) returns home after serving during World War II only to be met with the same racism that he’d known all his life.

“Timing is everything … it’s just time,” the famed-singer told Ryan of her two noms. “Once you’re able to see yourself clear … the universe opens up for you.”

The actress admitted she was in shock when she learned of her two noms and recalled to Ryan that it was Diddy who organized that epic night out with Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Pharrell, DJ Khaled, Jesse Williams and more.

“That was actually the night that I found out I got the two nominations and my brother Puff called me up and was like, ‘What are we doing? This is incredible, we have to round up all of our friends and peers!’ And so it was his idea because I was just sitting at home being like, ‘Wow, I can’t even believe this is happening,’" she shared. "... He rounded up everybody quickly and it was that same night and we went to Tao and we were like hanging out and having a good time. It was like old times because I haven’t been able to see everybody in a long time and it was just beautiful to share that moment with my peers and my friends and my family was there … I love Puff for always thinking about the celebration. It was beautiful.”
