Kelly Clarkson: ‘I Find Nothing Wrong With a Spanking’

Kelly Clarkson is making headlines after sharing during an interview with 98.9 The Buzz in Rochester, New York, that she spanks her children as discipline.

"I'm not above a spanking, which people aren't necessarily into," the mom of kids River, 3, and Remy, 1, said. "I don't mean hitting her hard. I just mean a spanking."

The Grammy winner continued that she grew up being spanked and doesn’t feel it affected her in anyway.

"My parents spanked me, and I did fine in life, and I feel fine about it, and I do that as well," Clarkson said. "That's a tricky thing, when you're out in public, because then people are like, they think that's wrong or something, but I find nothing wrong with a spanking."

Clarkson explained that she doesn’t scare her children with the spank and that she “warns” them first.

"I warn her," Clarkson added of disciplining River. "I'm like, 'Hi, I'm going to spank you on your bottom if you don't stop right now, this is ridiculous,' and honestly it's really helped. She doesn't do that kind of stuff as often."

ABC News reports that The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parents "do not spank or use other physical punishments" when disciplining children and that spanking “only teaches aggressive behavior, and becomes ineffective if used often.”

Instead, the AAP suggests using “appropriate time outs for young children.”
