"You're making me nervous! You're Ryan Seacrest," said Theresa Caputo, the famous Long Island Medium who is known for using her psychic abilities to contact spirits from beyond the grave and reconnect them with the living.
Her psychic abilities began to manifest when she was 4 years old, but It wasn't until Caputo -- who hails from Hicksville, New York -- was in her mid-20s when she learned how to embrace her encounters with spirits and relay their messages to their living relatives. Her unscripted show Long Island Medium debuted in September 2011 and is now in its ninth season, starring Caputo as she meets with clients and performs impromptu private and group readings around the country.
"You have to understand, I feel souls," she told On Air with Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday. "I am the first one to say that what I do is absolutely crazy. How can someone communicate with someone that has died? [I'm the] first one to say it."
She added: "When I found out I had this gift, I said that I wanted to help people. If people were suffering from the loss of a loved one, no matter how they died, then that's how I would want to use my gift."
The medium has written the New York Times best-selling books You Can’t Make This Stuff Up and There’s More to Life Than This -- the latter novel debuted at No. 2 on the NY list. Her latest book Good Grief: Heal Your Soul, Your Loved Ones, and Learn to Live Again, out March 14, will discuss the powerful lessons she has learned from her readings to help people recover from their loss and find their "new normal."
"What I've learned is, there is really no right or wrong way to grieve. With the book, we go through all the stages of grief. The book actually gives you permission to grieve on your own," she said. "What I love about it is, it gives you healing moments at the end of every chapter to either journal in the book, or go out and do something in the memory of your loved ones."
During her in-studio appearance, Caputo said she felt three souls that stepped forward, including a young male who "restricted [her] throat area," which is her symbol for a cause of death related to the throat region. Caputo's reading spoke directly to Sisanie, who had a cousin who passed away 16 years ago.
"He is my cousin; the only cousin I have out of 10 where we're the same age. We were always the closest and he took his life when he was 16 years old," Sis said. Caputo then relied the message: "I never wanted my death to define the man that I was."
Caputo also channeled Engineer Easton's best friend who passed away from a drowning accident, a caller whose mother passed away, and the father of Hunter McGrady's publicist Heather, who was tragically murdered before she was even born. Watch the video above.
