Last March, director Gary Marshall spoke to People magazine about a conversation he had with Anne Hathaway regarding a possible third installment of the Princess Diaries franchise, revealing, "It looks like we want to do Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan," but "Anne Hathaway is very pregnant, so we have to wait until she has the baby and then I think we’re going to do it."
But in July of 2016, Marshall died of complications from pneumonia following a stroke, so ideas for the sequel were tabled. Fast forward to February 2017: Julie Andrews, who played Queen Clarisse Renaldi, spoke to BuzzFeed while promoting her Netflix show, Julie's Greenroom, and said Princess Diaries 3 may still happen in Marshall's honor.
"There’s talk about it," Andrews said. "And [Hathaway]’s very keen to do it. I would very willingly and happily do it."
She added: "I think we might do it in honor of him. Annie had an idea that she wanted to pursue about it, and I’m all for it, so if she’d like to…."
Andrews also said the process of getting the movie to the big screen may take awhile, and she's "not sure what the status is right now." BuzzFeed also reached out to Hathaway's reps for comment, and they said it is "way too premature to discuss this project."
Princess Diaries debuted in 2001, and its sequel, Royal Engagement, was released in 2004. The franchise also starred Chris Pine, Hector Elizondo, and Heather Matarazzo.
