After partnering with Kendrick Lamar for their 2016 release "Don't Wanna Know," Maroon 5 tapped Future to provide a few bars for the band's latest single "Cold."
The track features mid-tempo bass drops and tenor vocals emitting from frontman Adam Levine, who is ruminating on a relationship turned sour. "Baby tell me how did you get so / cold enough to chill my bones," he sings. "It feels like I don't know you anymore / don't understand why you're so cold to me."
On Tuesday morning, Levine called On Air with Ryan Seacrest to explain the lyrics that contradict his current relationship status with supermodel Behati Prinsloo, who he described as "so much cooler than me," "the greatest ever," and "beautiful thing." Levine said he stepped outside of his personal life and cited other relationships like he did for the pop collective's 2002 release "She Will Be Loved," which was inspired by a friend's relationship with his girlfriend.
"Sometimes I take an overhead's view and go from that perspective," he said of his unique songwriting approach, which he revealed spawned a lot of "dark" new songs for the band's upcoming album. "When someone brings a song and I work with them on it, maybe that's how they're feeling. It's kind of cool that I can become that person for a moment. It's kind of fun to play dress up with songs."
Maroon 5 will deliver a debut performance of "Cold" on The Ellen DeGeneres Show this Wednesday, but fans can hold themselves over by downloading the track on iTunes here.
With Maroon 5 working on a new collection that succeed 2014's V, rumors of Levine's departure from NBC's The Voice -- where he served as a coach for 12 seasons -- began to make headlines. On the speculations, the singer said, "I don't know what I'm supposed to say," and later added, "At the end of the day, I'm pretty sure that's all nonsense."
