In the midst of a tumultuous political climate, actress Drew Barrymore believes her new Netflix comedy series, Santa Clarita Diet, provides the exact escapism people need at the moment.

Premiering this Friday (February 3) in its first season with 10 episodes, the show will star Sheila (Barrymore) and Joel Hammond (Timothy Olyphant) as a married team of real estate agents living and working in the suburbs of North Los Angeles. One day while showcasing a house, Sheila begins to vomit profusely, causing her to pass out and wake up dead. Despite her death and somewhat reincarnation, Sheila feels refreshed and energized with a new lease on life.

"It has a lot of optimism in a strange way," she told On Air with Ryan Seacrest on Thursday. "I think it's very appropriate for 2017. When I was reading it last summer, I was going through some tough stuff in my own personal life, and you know what? It made me laugh. It has this sort of sweetness there. I think the world could use a little escapism right now. We could all enjoy a bloody good laugh!"

She added: "The show is about female empowerment and it's great for guys because it's about a married couple. So I hope people have alone time, date night with it. I think they're going to laugh and enjoy it and it's going to make them happy. It's different and I'm really proud of it."

Santa Clarita Diet is available to stream in its entirety on Friday.
