Do artists inform their exes when they have songs written about them prior to releasing the music?
Tanya Rad's trending report is diving into this, specifically with Kelly Clarkson's latest album. Songs are often times a lyrical diary for many songwriters and musicians, Kelly Clarkson's Chemistry record is a collection of songs that portray all aspects of her past relationship with ex-husband Brandon Blackstock, including the good and the bad.
Some examples are in the song "Me" where the lyrics say "your insecurity was the death of you and me."
In her latest single "Mine," Clarkson talks about questioning her partner's motives.
Because of how personal the songs and lyrics get, the singer revealed the message she sent to her ex before the album was released:
“HEY, I DIDN’T JUST DIMINSH US DOWN TO ONE THING. IT’S ALL IN THERE. THE RIDE. THE BEAUTY IS IN THERE AS WELL.”
Although she did not reveal the response, it brought up a good question about whether or not artists in fact open up to their past relationships or people that a song is written about to let them know.
