Jessica Simpson Reveals Why Her Marriage To Nick Lachey Ended

We know that Jessica Simpson's upcoming memoir touches on her childhood traumas and romance with John Mayer, but there hasn't been any excerpts released about her marriage to Nick Lachey, until now.

In another excerpt from People, the celebrity gossip outlet previewed a portion of Open Book, which touches on the dissolution of her marriage to her pop star peer. As you might recall, the couple started dating in late the '90s, before getting married in 2002 and launching into superstardom with MTV's Newlyweds. "He was my first love," the star, 39, admitted of the throwback romance. "Nick loved the fact I was so strong in my faith and that I had this wide-eyed innocent approach to life. When he proposed in 2002, I said yes."

Later on, Simpson detailed the reason for their divorce, explaining that they were finding it difficult to connect with each other off-camera and that was the beginning of the end. "We were young and pioneering our way through reality television, always miced and always on. We worked and we were great at it but when it came time to being alone, we weren’t great at it anymore," she explained. Simpson filed for divorce in 2005 after three years of marriage and seven years together with Lachey.

"We really got crushed by the media and by ourselves," she shared. "I couldn’t lie to our fans and I couldn’t give somebody hope that we were this perfect golden couple."

Nonetheless, Simpson said that she has respect for Lachey and can reflect on her early '20s with a better mindset. "I was really young and my success hadn’t really begun. He knew me as this young innocent 18-year-old that had never been introduced to the world in so many ways. I went straight from my father to him. Nick’s very smart. He was eight years older than me, but he was also young," she continued.

While Simpson is currently married to former NFL player Eric Johnson, with three children together, Lachey also is also married to Vanessa Minnillo with three children of their own.
