Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner surprised everyone on Wednesday night (May 1) after pulling off a not-so-secret wedding ceremony in Las Vegas. The pair tied the knot with the help of an Elvis impersonator, Dan + Shay, and Diplo's Instagram Live. Yup. It's pretty much as epic as it sounds.
Many fans initially believed this was a last minute decision made after the Billboard Music Awards, but the Elvis impersonator spilled all the tea about the nuptials and it turns out this Vegas wedding was planned in advance. Another source spoke with People, as well, revealing Joe and Sophie needed to say "I do" in the U.S. ahead of their big French wedding planned for some time this summer. “They had to get married in the States to make it legal, but the wedding is still in Europe," the source explained.
Per the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in France (via People), “At least one of the parties to be married must have resided in France for at least forty days immediately preceding the marriage. This precludes a wedding in cases where both parties are only visiting for a short stay”; furthermore, “In France a religious ceremony does not constitute a legal marriage.”
Sophie's mom, Sally Turner, spoke to the Daily Mail about her daughter's wedding, which it does not appear she attended. "Sophie did call me before. She said, 'Mum, I'm getting married in Vegas,'" she said. "I am absolutely delighted and so is my husband Andrew." Sally also seemed to hint that the France wedding, which Joe confirmed in an interview with his brothers a few months ago, might not be happening anymore. "Don't believe everything you read," she said.
There were some hints that Joe and Sophie came to Vegas prepared to tie the knot. The biggest one, of course, was their outfits. Joe, as well as his brothers Nick Jonas and Kevin Jonas, donned different suits from the BBMAs. They went for a more classic look with matching grey suits, as opposed to their eye-catching patterned looks from the red carpet. Sophie made an outfit change, as well. She rocked a silk Bezva jumpsuit for her walk down the aisle.
Joe and Sophie have yet to officially comment on their wedding. Congratulations you two!
