John Legend Makes History, Becomes First Black Man To Reach EGOT Status

John Legend's win at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards is one for the record books.

The 39-year-old R&B singer took home the Outstanding Variety Special Emmy during Sunday's ceremony (September 9) for producing NBC's live production Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, becoming the first African American man to receive EGOT status. He was also in the running for outstanding actor in a limited series or movie for his portrayal as Jesus himself in the production.

Whoopi Goldberg became the first African American winner in 2002.

The EGOT honor is given to stars who have achieved awards at the Emmys, the Grammys, the Oscars, and the Tonys.

Legend also joins fellow EGOT celeb Robert Lopez — who was also 39 when he received the honor in 2014 — as one of the youngest stars to receive the recognition.

During his career, the "Green Light" musician has been decorated with 10 Grammys, an Oscar in 2015 for Best Original Song ("Glory"), and a Tony Award for co-producing the stage play Jitney in 2017.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, who co-produced Jesus Christ Superstar, also became EGOT celebs at the function. Legend's wife, Chrissy Teigen, cheered on the trio's milestones with an image of the “EGOT GOATS" via Twitter.

"Before tonight, only 12 people had won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony in competitive categories," Legend captioned another pic from the celebration. "Sirs Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice and I joined that group when we won an Emmy for our production of their legendary show Jesus Christ Superstar. So happy to be part of this team. So honored they trusted me to play Jesus Christ. So amazed to be in such rarefied air. #EGOT"

The Creative Arts Emmy Awards winners will also be announced live at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards on NBC September 17.
