Luke Hemmings on ‘CALM,’ How Quarantine Grew His Appreciation for 5SOS

5 Seconds of Summer is celebrating the release of their forth studio album CALM and although they can’t promote the album physically together amid COVID-19 social-distancing, they’ve never been closer. Luke Hemmings shared with Ryan Seacrest on-air on Thursday, March 26, they’ve been video chatting and the title of their album has taken on a new meaning.

“It’s definitely taken on a new meaning,” Luke shared with Seacrest. “Obviously we named it awhile ago, months ago, but it definitely has a new weight to it with what’s going on in the world. … I’m really happy we're releasing it even though times are hard at the moment but … music is what people need right now.”

Luke, who has been quarantining with his dog and girlfriend for the past two weeks, shared the album title is an acronym for their first names: Calum, Ashton, Luke, Michael.

“That’s where it originally came from and our fans used to call us that,” Luke added. “Way back in the day all the original fans of 5SOS used to call us that so it’s kind of a nod to them and also it kind of sums up where we are: [a] little bit more sure of ourselves and the band.”

And the band has never been closer.

"I definitely think [the quarantine] put things in perspective and made the band realize how good of friends we are, to be honest,” he added. “It might sound a bit cheesy, but I really just want to go see them and hang out with them. … It’s definitely odd to be at home and not with them while we promote an album.”
