Taika Waititi to Direct Two New 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' Shows

Wirter, director and all-around visionary Taika Waititi just took home his first Oscar, Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit based on the novel Caging Skies.

And for one of his next projects he will be adapting another book, one of the most beloved children’s stories of all time Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which has famously been adapted into films twice previously.

One starring Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka and another time with Johnny Depp in the role.

This time around Taika will be transforming the book into two different animated Netflix series.

According to Deadline, the first show will be based on all the characters in the book. And the second will be a bigger departure focusing on the Oompa-Loompas, the tiny, odd workers who make all the candy in the chocolate factory.

Both shows will expand quite a bit beyond the original story.

Netflix had been looking to develop Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for quite some time and the minute they met with Taika they knew they had their man.
