Outside of maybe Billy Idol and Billie Holiday, you would probably be hard pressed to find two more successful Billies in the music industry than Billie Eilish and Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong.
This is one of the reasons that Rolling Stone decided to have them interview each other for their special Musicians on Musicians issue. The other reason is their mutual respect and fandom.
As they talked more similarities surfaced. Both create music that typically isn’t mainstream, but has found a huge audience. Both are very transparent and both want to keep it real.
When Billie Joe confessed he struggled with early success and writing the follow up to Green Day’s massive album Dookie, Billie Eilish admitted she’s currently in the same head space.
"[My next album] haunts me. There was a period where I was like, 'Do I even enjoy music?' It just felt like so much touring. And I don’t mean the shows. The shows are always my favorite part. But it was just traveling and being alone all the time," she tells him. "This last tour I went on was the first I’ve ever enjoyed. I feel like I have this amazing thing that now I actually see."
