Is Lizzo Not Eligible for Best New Artist at the Grammys?

Lizzo, who along with Billie Eilish, seems to be everybody’s front runner for Best New Artist at the Grammys.

But outside of Billie, Lizzo’s biggest hurdle to winning was eligibility.

The rules state that to be eligible artists must have released at least five singles or one album, but not more than thirty songs or three records.

Lizzo had previously released two albums, two EPs and two Mixtapes, totaling more than thirty songs, so there was concern she would be left off the ballot.

However, the Grammys has decided that since much of Lizzo’s prior work was released independently or via small labels it didn’t offer her much of a shot at a breakthrough.

This isn’t entirely unprecedented, both Meghan Trainor and Maren Morris are examples of other nominated artists with similar release backgrounds. So Lizzo is eligible.

Now we’ll have to wait until early next year to see if she wins it.
