The new crime drama The Kitchen starring Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Elisabeth Moss is unique for a number of reasons.
It’s the rare comic-book-turned-movie that doesn’t involve superheroes in tights, it's based on a gritty pulp-detective DC comic of the same name.
And two of its three leads, Melissa McCarthy and Tiffany Haddish, are known for comedy though Melissa earned an Oscar nod for Can You Ever Forgive Me?.
But for Tiffany, this is her first role in a drama and its been a long time coming after going through years of being rejected at audition after audition.
It turns out, Tiffany had a secret way of getting feedback from casting directors for roles she didn’t land, even when they wouldn’t volunteer it.
She explained in a Hollywood Reporter roundtable: "I'd put my phone on voice memo and put it in my bag, I'd do the audition, walk out, and leave my bag. ”Then I'd come back and say 'Oh, I forgot my purse in here.'"
She’d then listen to what they'd say, Some of it was racist, sexist, but some she actually thought was constructive. And used everything they said even the negative stuff to her advantage and it looks like it paid off.
