Director and producer Ava DuVernay has built an entertainment empire with 14 TV shows either on the way or in production and 22 movies already released.
All while employing far more women and people of color than the industry standard and staying incredibly grounded, despite her enormous success.
That perspective partially comes from Ava’s long stint behind-the-scenes in Hollywood as a film publicist. She tells The Hollywood Reporter:
"I think some filmmakers, you're walking down the red carpets and lights are flashing and you're feeling yourself. I used to roll that red carpet down there on my hands and knees. I see the machinery of it, and that has allowed me to never take any of this too personally."
