The controversy surrounding Netflix’s forthcoming series Insatiable makes an important point, stars Debby Ryan and Alyssa Milano stressed during an interview with Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday, August 8. The dark, twisted, satirical revenge comedy, which generated controversy and judgement after the trailer dropped earlier this summer, stars Debby and Alyssa and revolves around a teen named Patty who is bullied, and upon returning to school transformed, seeks the ultimate revenge.
“The show, to me, is a bunch of people coming of age,” Alyssa shared. "[Debby’s character] Patty grows up incredibly bullied and from a broken family and her mom is a bit of hot mess,” Debby started. “She is going through figuring herself out under intense bullying and intense scrutiny and that has created some damage within her, and through a tipping point and a series of events, [she] ends up getting her jaw broken and wired shut and returns to school a few months later in a completely different body. [She] then is met with different treatment, which then ignites and fuels a rage being [she’s] the exact same person who she always was.”
After the trailer dropped, people were quick to judge the series, accusing the show of fat-shaming and more.
“I’m very proud of the show,” Alyssa stated in regards to the controversy. “I will not apologize for the show. First of all, I think there’s not controversy surrounding the show, there’s controversy surrounding a 1 minute and 28 second trailer that people have not seen.”
Alyssa continued that the controversy is important because it mimics the exact message of the show.
“I think the controversy actually is important because I think what we are saying is don’t judge a book by its cover and yet people were judging the trailer and maybe Netflix is totally a genius as far as marketing -- or maybe they just lucked upon that -- but I think its incredibly important that this conversation was raised because there are many more conversations to have within the 12 hours of this show and I assume that we will be having them.”
