Do you remember last year when a certain Danish word/trend really shook up everyone's worlds? We loved the idea of hygge, which encompasses all things cozy and comforting. And now, in 2020, there's a NEW Danish word for us to become obsessed with.
'Samfundssind' is the Danish word that encompasses everything about this year.
This is defined by the Danish Language Council as “putting the concern of society higher than one’s own interests.” It is also more loosely translated as “community spirit” or “social mindedness” according to the BBC.
In March, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen used the word in a press conference about what we all need to do this year.
He said: “We have to stand together by keeping our distance… I would like to thank … all who have so far shown that this is exactly what we have in Denmark — samfundssind.”
While I have literally no idea how to say this Danish word that really encompasses what we're all about this year, I'm still all for it and would love to bring it into my life more!!
It can be simply things like wearing a mask, washing your hands, staying home when you don't need to go out, and making sure your friends, loved ones, and neighbors have everything they need!
What's incredible is how much Danish people and companies have embraced their samfundssind over the last few months! And I think we all could continue to learn a lesson from all they have done for each other.
SO if you're out and about today and see someone who needs a little help, share the samfundssind spirit! Or if you don't NEED to be out and about, you could just go home and protect yourself and others by spending more time at home. So simple.
