MTV certainly seems to know what's up - at their TV and Movie Awards this year they took away the gender specific categories and mixed the TV and movie nominations together.
Now they're doing something similar with the VMAs, and I think it's cool! Gone are the days of the 'Best Male Video' and 'Best Female Video' categories, but instead just genre-specific categories AND new categories like 'best fight against the system' and 'best visual effects'.
